LG TVs use a software application called webOS to control settings, install applications, and support streaming services.
Before using an app, you have to download and install it through the LG Content Store. You will also have to use the Content Store to install any pending app updates.
But some users have encountered challenges whereby they cannot update apps on their LG TVs. Why does this happen, and what is the solution?
Generally, the newest models of LG TVs have a feature called Quickstart. The setting puts the TV in standby mode when you turn it off, meaning your device will start up more quickly the next time you turn it on.
However, most issues on LG TVs result from the Quickstart setting.
In other words, network interfaces and some applications have problems coming out of the suspended state when you enable Quickstart+.
Therefore, disabling the option is the first troubleshooting step to try when your LG TV won’t update apps.
But there are also other steps you can take to solve this problem.
How to update apps on LG Smart TV
Before fixing the problem, ensure you have followed the proper steps for updating apps on your LG Smart TV.
If you are using the newest model of LG TV, apps will update automatically.
But you can also follow the steps below to update apps on an old LG Smart TV:
- Press the Home button on your remote
- Select the LG Content Store
- Select Apps
- Choose My Apps
- Open the app you want to update.
- Select Update if an update is available.
At this point, wait until the update is over and open the app to get started.
How to fix LG Smart TV apps that won’t update
If apps won’t update on LG Smart TV, you can do the following to fix the issue.
1. Check your network connection
An unstable network connection can make it challenging for you to download or update apps on your LG TV.
Here is what to do:
- Restart your router, modem, and TV
- Check to ensure no other devices are interfering with the network
- Connect your TV using Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi
It also helps to position the router close to your TV for better connectivity.
2. Check your router’s DNS
Set the router’s Primary DNS 1 to 8.8.8.8 and the Secondary DNS 2 to 8.8.4.4. Follow these steps.
- Press Settings on your LG TV remote.
- Go to All Settings > Network > Advanced Wi-Fi Settings.
- Select the Edit button.
- Uncheck the box labelled Set Automatically.
- Set the DNS to 8.8.8.8.
- Select Connect.
Once you connect, go to the LG Content Store and see whether you can access the portal.
3. Turn off the Quick Start feature
The Quickstart feature is not available on all LG TVs. But if your device has it, do the following:
- Press Settings on your remote
- Select All Settings
- Select General
- Choose Quick Start
- Toggle the option OFF
Once done, power-cycle your TV and try updating the app.
4. Check your region settings
When you have not set the region properly, authentications within the app and the LG Content Store will not go through.
The issue mostly happens with streaming apps. Therefore, try changing the Regions Settings and see whether the option works.
5. Update your LG TV firmware
Updating an app can be challenging if your LG TV firmware is out-of-date. Fortunately, all new LG Smart TVs will update automatically when updates are available.
If not:
- Go to Settings
- Press the (?) icon
- Select Update
- Check Update Version
If you have an LG TV running webOS:
- Go to Settings
- Select All Settings
- Go to General
- Select About This TV
- Go to Allow Automatic Updates
- Select Check for Updates
Once the update appears, follow the on-screen prompts to complete the download and installation.
Updating LG TV apps shouldn’t be that hard
If an app is not updating on your LG TV, consider switching off Quickstart. Alternatively, check your network connection to ensure you have stable and fast internet.
Another solution is to reset Region Settings and update your LG TV firmware.
