What to Expect in Vikings: Valhalla Season 4: Characters, Battles, and Twists

Despite Vikings: Valhalla ending with season three, fans of the show have been sharing possible plots that the series could have explored in season four.

The final chapter of Leif Erikson (portrayed by Sam Corlett), Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), and Harald Sigurdsson’s (Leo Suter) story premiered on July 11, 2024 on Netflix.

After the season finale, fans were left with more questions than answers. Here are characters, battles, and twists that could have been explored in season 4.

Magnus Olafsson

In season 3, Magnus Olafsson(Set Sjöstrand) had two missions: to get his father’s body from Jomsborg for his canonization and to become King of Norway.

Magnus agreed to co-rule with Harald after Leif saved Freydis from her execution. Harald, however, turned against Magnus and ended up imprisoning him. We know that in actual history, Magnus died a short while after co-ruling with Harald.

Season 4 of Vikings Valhalla could have answered whether Magnus escaped or faced death in Harald’s hands.

Harald, as King of Norway

Does Harald Sigurdsson retain the legitimacy of the throne, or is he overthrown? In season three, after escaping from his execution in Constantinople and killing George Maniakes (Florian Munteanu), Harald formed his army and traveled to Kattegat to claim the throne.

He accepts to co-rule with his nephew Magnus but later imprisons him. He then announces himself as the only King of Norway. History tells us that Harald was a ruthless king, and season four could have portrayed his reign and probable downfall.

Queen Emma and Harold Harefoot

After King Canute’s death in Vikings Valhalla Season 3, Emma remains in England as queen, but there is a fear that the earls may try to overthrow her.

Godwin suggests that she summon her son, Edward (Cal O’Driscoll), to counter the earls’ plans. However, Godwin intercepts the message and calls for Prince Harold Harefoot (Pyry Kähkönen) instead because he wants the prince to take over.

Despite his best efforts, he did not account for Queen Emma’s charming Prince Harold. Do the two end up together, or does Harold succeed in making Queen Emma flee the throne? Season 4 could have easily answered these questions.

Godwin’s next plans on Vikings: Valhalla Season 4

Godwin’s plan to have his son become King of England seems to have been thwarted, although he continues to take extreme measures to fulfill his interests.

In season 1 of Vikings Valhalla, Godwin killed King Edmund. In season 2, he planned an assassination attempt on Queen Emma to join the royal family. He achieved his goal of joining the royal family after he married Canute’s niece, Gytha.

Season 4 could have continued his story and whether he achieves his goal of enthroning his son or his sins catch up with him.

Freydis and the battle to rescue Harald Jr. & The Jomsvikings from Greenland

Freydis had a son, Harald Jr., with Harald and gave birth in Jomsborg. Vikings: Valhalla introduced Stigr (Leander Vyvey), a healer who arrived at Jomsborg and trained Harald Jr. in combat.

Erik the Red (Goran Višnjić), Freydis’ father, went to great lengths to ensure that Freydis, Harald Jr., and Stigr wouldn’t leave Greenland. He had Harald Jr. hidden and Freydis imprisoned, but her mother freed her.

Season 4 would have explored Freydis’s battle to regain her son and free the Jomsvikings from Erik the Red’s rule. Freydis has a vendetta against her father, and the season would have addressed the unfinished business.

Stigr, injured while looking for Harald Jr., could have his recovery or death recounted in season 4.

Leif, Freydis and the Golden Land

After rescuing Freydis from her execution, Leif and Freydis leave Kattegat to explore the Golden Land, Vinland.

Freydis wanted to travel to the Golden Land, hoping it could be the Jomsvikings’ new home after she rescues them from Greenland.

Vikings: Valhalla season 4 would have seen Leif and Freydis arrive at Vinland, explore it, and possibly battle to claim the land.

Season 4 would have been action-packed, as new characters from season three would have had their histories explored. Sadly, we will not get to see these plots brought to life on our screens.
