TCL Roku TV sound not working! How to fix

If you own a TCL Roku TV, you may have come across a problem whereby you see a video from the player on the TV but cannot hear the associated sound.

Whenever you see a video, it means the TV is working well. But if your TCL Roku TV does not have sound, you need to figure out the cause and fix it to continue watching your content.

One way to get the sound back on your TV is to press the mute button on your remote. Even if you do not remember to have muted the device, someone else may have done it.

Also, press the volume up button and determine the TV’s current volume meter. This problem is different from the one where sound works but images don’t show.

If you can hear a sound as you increase the volume, then somebody had turned it low. But many more issues can cause the problem.

The following are some steps you can use to fix sound issues on your TCL Roku TV.

How to fix no sound on TCL Roku TV

Some methods of fixing the problem include:

1. Unplug the speakers hooked up to the TV

If the in-built speakers are not producing any sound, start by unplugging the speakers you have hooked up to the TV.

The step allows you to determine whether sound can play on the device itself instead of the auxiliary output speakers. That way, you will know whether the external devices are defective or the TV itself.

2. Change the channel

Try changing the channel to a different one to determine whether the loss of sound is on every channel or the current one you are watching.

If the other channel has sound, then the current one is experiencing some technical issues. That also means your TV is working well.

3. Check your cable connections

If you are using a composite cable, ensure you have attached the audio connectors snugly at both ends. A slightly loose HMDI connection can interfere with either sound or video.

Note that the TCL Roku device does not need a separate cable. Therefore, check all the wires connected to a different device like a Blu-ray player.

External devices can also interrupt the sound on your Roku.

4. Change the TV’s audio settings

If there is no audio on TCL Roku TV, try to change the audio settings. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  • Scroll up or down and select Settings.
  • Select system, then Audio.
  • Select S/PDIF and ARC, and make a selection.

At this point, you will have two options for making a selection. These include Auto Detect and Auto Passthrough. Choose Auto Detect.

It is the default setting that allows your device to detect the capabilities of your surround sound system automatically. But your connection has to be on HDMI for this to work well.

5. Disconnect and reconnect all the cables

Disconnect and reconnect all cables to try and fix the sound on your TCL Roku TV. These include the power cable, HDMI, and more. Once done:

  • Press the Home button on your remote.
  • Scroll up or down and select Settings.
  • Select Audio.
  • Set Audio mode to Stereo.
  • Set HDMI to PCM-Stereo.

If your Roku player has an optical port, change the HDMI and S/PDIF options to PCM-Stereo.

6. Turn sound leveling off

You can turn TCL Roku TV volume leveling OFF using the steps below:

  • Press the Star button on your remote.
  • Under the Menu, scroll down to Volume Mode.
  • At the Volume Mode, turn the option OFF.

Once done, restart your TV and try again to see whether you have fixed the sound not working problem.

7. Change the optical cable

Changing the optical cable is necessary if the TCL Roku TV sound cuts out. The optical cable you are using may be defective. Consider buying a new one and try again –we recommend this cable from Syncwire.

You can also try to troubleshoot the problem using the following methods:

  • Press the Home button on your remote.
  • Scroll down to Settings.
  • Select Audio > HDMI or HDMI and S/PDIF if you are using the player with an optical connector.

At this point, you will see the option Auto Detect. But instead of choosing Auto Detect, select an option that matches the capabilities of your TV. That could be a soundbar or AVR.

Once you choose the right option, restart your device and check whether you have solved the sound distortion option.

8. Restart your TCL Roku TV

When you are watching a video and notice no sound on the apps, consider restarting your device. You can do it in different ways:

  • Unplug your TV from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 20 seconds.
  • Plug it back and try again.

Alternatively, you can go to System > Settings > System Restart > Restart.

Another option is to change Auto Detect to PCM – Stereo. Go to Settings > Audio > HDMI. At HDMI, set it to PCM – Stereo.

9. Change Audio Mode to Dolby Digital

If you have connected your Roku player to a soundbar or AVR using an optical cable, consider changing the audio mode to Dolby Digital.

  • Press the Home button on your remote.
  • Scroll up or down and select Settings.
  • Select Audio.

At this point, set HDMI and S/PDIF to Dolby D. The option should give you a solution to no sound when streaming.

10. Change the input on the soundbar AVR

You can also try to connect your Roku device to a different input on the soundbar or AVR to see whether it works for you. If it solves your issue, the previous input was not the correct one. While at it, try changing the cables one at a time.

Conclusion

When you are playing videos on your TCL Roku device and hear no sound, several things might have caused the problem. First, press the mute button and see if it works.

You can also adjust the volume up to try and solve the issue. Or, try to get the sound back on your TV by disconnecting and reconnecting all the cables.
