With Samsung Smart TV, you can stream your favorite shows, movies, listen to music, and watch football. But sometimes, the experience of using the device becomes unbearable.
It happens when your Samsung TV keeps turning on and off repeatedly. The behavior can happen anytime, including when playing a video game, when powering up the TV, and when viewing your favorite content.

If your Samsung Smart TV keeps restarting, it could be due to outdated software or loose power cables.
In the case of software, a simple restart is all it needs for you to fix the problem. You can also check cables and fix them by yourself.
However, if you have tried all these steps but your Samsung TV restarts while watching your favorite shows, it may be down to:
- Bulging capacitors.
- A defective motherboard.
- The device is updating its software.
- The device is unable to establish an internet connection when updating its software.
Your TV could also be restarting while streaming because of a short on the power supply board. When this happens, you will see a flashing light all the time. That also means the problem is either software or hardware-based.
How to troubleshoot a Samsung TV that keeps restarting
If you are experiencing this problem, we’ve explained the solutions you need to apply. Try each of them until you find what works for you.
1. Update device software
The Samsung Smart TV receives software updates to fix bugs or add new features and applications.
By keeping the software updated, you can help to solve many issues with the device, including frequent restarts. Here is how:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Support.
- Select Software Update.
- Highlight Auto Update and turn the option ON.
The steps above will update the software automatically. Alternatively, you can upgrade the software via the internet. To do this:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Support.
- Select Software Update then Update Now.
The device will download new updates and install them.
2. Power cycle the device
A power cycle helps to reinitialize a set of configuration parameters in the Samsung Smart TV. It also allows the device to recover from its unresponsive state.
If the frequent restart is due to network activity, it will help to reset it and start anew.
- Unplug the TV from the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the cables back in.
Power up the TV and see whether it helps.
3. Factory reset the TV
A factory reset will restore your TV to default settings. It will get rid of all your files and other data that may be causing the Samsung TV boot loop. Here is how to do it:
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Select Reset.
- Enter your PIN or the default one as 0000.
- Select Reset.
- Select OK to complete the reset.
- Depending on your model, go to Settings – Support – Self Diagnosis – Reset.
Your TV will restart automatically.
4. Check the power cables

If the power cables have come out loose, you will experience problems with frequent restarts.
You can correct this by connecting all power cables and ensuring they fit tightly. Next, switch on your device and see whether that helps.
Also, you may want to reseat the cables. It is a step you should consider because dirt gets in the connections. When that happens, it causes some resistance. Disconnect and reconnect the cords to try and fix the issue.
5. Check the capacitors
The power supply in the TV may have defective capacitors, hence the reason your Samsung Smart TV keeps restarting. If this is the issue, you will tell it in different ways:
- The power supply will click when you turn on the TV.
- The top of the capacitor is bulging and not flat.
If you notice any of the above, replace the capacitors with high voltage ones. Also, replace the power supply board with a new one. Hire an expert to do it for you.
6. Check the motherboard
In some cases, frequent restarts of the Samsung Smart TV could be a result of a defective motherboard.
It can happen if one or more microchips on the motherboard have stopped working, causing the device to power on and off frequently. You can correct this issue in two ways – repair or replace the board.
Repairing the broken microchips may seem easy and cheap. But it requires a skilled individual to do it. For a long-term solution, consider replacing the motherboard.
If your warranty is intact, contact Samsung customer support to help you replace it and ensure an effective Samsung TV power cycling fix.
7. Check your internet connection
If you have set your device to check for updates automatically, you need to ensure you have a stable internet connection.
But if your Samsung TV runs into network issues throughout this process, you will experience frequent restarts of the device. You can troubleshoot this issue in different ways:
- Unplug the Ethernet cable and restart the device. If there is no internet, your TV will not check for updates. Also, consider switching off Wi-Fi and try again.
- If you configured your device to connect through Wi-Fi and you have changed it to Ethernet, switch back to the wireless network. When you disconnect Wi-Fi and connect Ethernet, your TV defaults back to wireless and logs into the router. A network communication error occurs, and eventually, the frequent restarts.
You can also try to reconnect to the internet and try again.
- Click on the Home button on your remote.
- Select Settings.
- Select Network or General.
- Go to Open Network Settings.
Choose between a wireless or wired connection.
8. Reset Smart Hub
Some users experience this problem after updates to the Samsung Smart TV Smart Hub. If this is your case, consider resetting Smart Hub.
- Go to Smart Hub.
- Select the Smart Hub Reset.
- Select Reset Smart Hub.
You will have to enter your PIN or use the default one as 0000.
Several factors can explain why your Samsung Smart TV keeps restarting or turning off every 5 seconds. The issue could be a broken motherboard or defective capacitors.
In other cases, the device software could be out-of-date or recent updates in the Smart Hub could be causing the issue. Consider updating the firmware or resetting Smart Hub and try again.
