Hulu is one of the top streaming services in the United States in terms of market share and subscriber count. However, the streaming service might soon come to an end, with Disney reportedly preparing to shut down the Hulu app.
According to industry reports, Disney is working towards migrating Hulu’s entire library to Disney+, after which it will decommission the standalone app. The full shutdown of the app is likely to occur by the end of 2026.

Should Disney proceed with the plans to shut down the Hulu app, this will mark the end of an era for one of the major streaming platforms. However, Hulu’s content will still be available to subscribers, but on the Disney+ ecosystem.
Gradual integration of Hulu into Disney+
The news that the Hulu app is shutting down is not a surprise to subscribers, as Disney has been gradually integrating the platform into the Disney+ app. The integration began in 2024, when the company began introducing Hulu content on Disney+ for bundle subscribers.
In 2025, Disney announced the full integration of Hulu onto Disney+ in what it termed a “unified app experience”:
“Today we are announcing a major step forward in strengthening our streaming offering by fully integrating Hulu into Disney+,” stated Bob Iger, the then Walt Disney CEO, and Hugh Johnston, the company’s CFO.

In 2026, Disney took the Hulu integration a step further by introducing full profile syncs. The feature now allows bundle subscribers to link their Hulu profiles with Disney+, allowing them to seamlessly access watchlists, watch history, and recommendations.
Leaked secret plan to shut down Hulu app
Disney has not publicly confirmed when it is shutting down the Hulu app, despite the gradual integration of the platform into Disney+. As a matter of fact, in May 2026, a company rep told Variety there were no plans to phase out the app.
However, a leaked internal document has created doubt about Disney’s reassurance that Hulu will survive. The document, obtained by Business Insider, revealed the existence of “Project Gemini,” a phased plan to transition Hulu’s library into Disney+ and decommission the app.
“The Hulu tech stack and app will be decommissioned after all users have transitioned,” read part of the document.
The document’s claims have been further bolstered by Disney employees, who have claimed that the app is nearing its end, with active development halted. On top of that, Disney has already started phasing out the app on some platforms, including Nintendo Switch.
