Disney introduces new Disney+ and Hulu app features to make streaming easier for users

Disney has launched three new updates to help bring its separate streaming platforms closer together.

The company released three new Disney+ and Hulu app features that change how subscribers find, track, and watch their favorite shows.

For people tired of switching between apps to keep up with their shows, this update marks a big change in how they watch TV every day.

What are the new Disney+ and Hulu app features?

The biggest change for most users is adult profile linking. Now, eligible bundle subscribers can combine their Hulu and Disney+ profiles with one MyDisney login.

With this sync, anything you are watching on Hulu will now show up in the “Continue Watching” row on Disney+.

Also, shows saved to Hulu’s “My Stuff” will automatically appear in your Disney+ Watchlist, so you do not have to make separate lists anymore.

Importantly, people who only subscribe to Hulu can now log in to the Disney+ app too. They can stream their full Hulu library right inside the Disney+ app, without needing a bundle.

Disney is also offering a small selection of Disney+ and ESPN content to these standalone accounts. Users can customize their profiles with avatars from Hulu originals, as well as Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars characters.

Why you might not see the new Disney+ and Hulu app features yet

However, there are some important details that might leave many users out for now.

At first, only adult profiles (18 and older) can use profile linking. Kids’ accounts cannot link their data yet.

More frustratingly, subscribers on premium tiers like Hulu + Live TV, the Disney+ and Hulu bundle with HBO Max, or those with custom premium add-on channels are completely locked out of this feature for the time being.

These premium users still need to use the separate Hulu app.

Disney is also testing a new Live Guide feature

Disney says it will soon start beta testing a cable-style “Live Guide” in Disney+. This feature will show live streams, including ABC News Live and Disney+ Playtime for everyone, plus live ESPN feeds for those with sports packages.

Some people worried that all these changes meant Hulu would shut down, but a company spokesperson said there are “no current plans to sunset the Hulu app.”

For now, both apps will stay, but they are becoming more connected.
