Roku: How to delete your watch history

The watch history feature on Roku allows you to resume the titles you were watching before you closed a streaming session. Furthermore, it stores data on the films and TV shows you were watching.

Roku will also use the information to recommend the best channels and titles. But you can also choose to remove the information from Roku. And here, I will show you how to delete your watch history from Roku.

Roku does not have a straightforward way of deleting your watch history. In some instances, you may have to go to that specific channel and delete its watch history.

However, that does not mean you cannot delete Roku’s ‘Because You Watched’ section. We’ve explained different ways to do so.

How to delete your watch history on Roku

You can delete or remove a movie from Roku’s ‘continue watching’ list using different methods. Here are a few.

1. How to remove your watch history by deleting a channel

If you have watched a lot of content from one channel, consider removing it to delete your watch history. This is only applicable if you don’t wish to watch content from that particular channel immediately.

  • Go to your Roku home screen.
  • Highlight the channel you want to delete.
  • Press the asterisk or star (*) button on your remote.
  • Select Remove channel.
  • Select Confirm.

You can also remove a channel through the Roku Channel Store.

  • Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  • Select Streaming Channels. The Channel Store will open.
  • Find the channel you want to delete.
  • Select the channel.
  • Choose Remove channel.
  • Confirm your selection.

If you have the Roku mobile app, you can remove streaming channels by doing the following:

  • Open the Roku mobile app.
  • Go to the Home Tab.
  • Tap on Channels in the navigation bar.
  • Select My Channels from the Channels tab. A list of channels you installed on your Roku device will appear.
  • Tap and hold on to the channel you want to remove. You will get more information about the channel.
  • Tap on Remove.
  • Confirm your selection.

Roku will delete the channel and remove your watch history.

2. How to remove Continue watching inside the Roku Channel

A more efficient way to consider how to delete ‘continue watching’ on Roku is to go inside the Roku Channel. In that case:

  • Launch the Roku Channel.
  • Navigate to the content tile in the Continue Watching row.
  • Select the title you want to remove.
  • Press the star (*) key on your remote.
  • Select Remove from the Continue Watching row.

Ensure you are inside the Roku Channel app or any other channel app. Otherwise, the star (*) key will not give you any options when you press it. You must also select or highlight the title before pressing the key.

3. Factory reset your Roku

Another option to remove recently watched content on your Roku is to Factory reset your device. The option is extreme but will delete all your data, including channels and personal preferences, unlink your device from your Roku account, and watch history.

  • Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  • Scroll and select Settings.
  • Select System.
  • Select Advanced System Settings.
  • Select Factory reset.
  • If you use the Roku TV, select Factory reset everything. Otherwise, move to the next step.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.

Once you Factory reset your device, you must start afresh by adding channels to your Roku account.

What does clearing the cache on Roku do?

Clearing cache on Roku helps to ensure a better streaming performance. It will speed up your Roku device and fix other issues you may encounter, such as buffering.

Furthermore, clearing the cache will delete all temporary files stored on your device and free up some space and memory. This also helps when Roku is not working.
