AnimeKai, one of the most notorious anime streaming sites, has officially shut down. The site went dark on May 10, 2026, following several days of reported technical issues.
AnimeKai’s shutdown has shocked many anime fans, who relied on the illegal streaming site to access free anime content. It also marks another major blow to free anime streaming, following recent crackdowns on pirated anime streaming sites.

AnimeKai shutdown caused by a data center fire
AnimeKai issues began in April 2026, after users started reporting issues with the update of various anime titles. A few days later, there were reports that the site was experiencing “technical issues” before it completely shut down on May 10, 2026.
What’s striking about AnimeKai’s shutdown is that it was not as a result of an anti-piracy crackdown, as is usually the case when illegal streaming sites go dark.
Instead, it was a result of a fire at a third-party data center, which reportedly compromised the platform’s file hosting service. AnimeKai confirmed the cause of the shutdown on various social media platforms, including the site’s official subreddit, where a statement read:
“Due to all the recent issues with the site… especially with the data center being on fire. The developer has shared that he will no longer be continuing the project, and it is time for all of us to move on.”
But while AnimeKai was not taken down by authorities, it had been under increasing legal pressure from anti-piracy operations targeting illegal anime platforms. Therefore, it is likely the site would have still gone dark, even without the data center fire.
Free anime streaming has taken a hit in recent months
AnimeKai going dark is another major blow to anime fans who rely on free anime streaming sites.
In recent months, popular free, illegal anime streaming platforms such as HiAnime, 9Anime, 4anime, AniWatchTV, and AnimePlay (a streaming app) have shut down. Many of these platforms went dark following anti-piracy crackdowns.
In addition to the crackdown on illegal streaming platforms, anime fans also suffered another blow when Crunchyroll ended its free ad-supported tier in December 20225. The free tier was one of the few legal streaming platforms where users could stream free anime content legally.

The loss of AnimeKai, other illegal anime streaming sites, and Crunchyroll’s free tier has left anime fans without many options for accessing free content.
That said, there are still several legal platforms where users can stream anime content, some free and others paid.
Illegal anime streaming is also unlikely to end any time soon, with the internet full of a myriad of illegal streaming platforms, including AnimeKai copycats that have since popped up since the notorious site went dark.
