Fix Twitch error 4000: Resource format not supported

Twitch error 4000 can occur when you try playing any stream on the platform and it is normally alongside the message “Media resource format not supported”.

This error can be frustrating since it recurs every few seconds or minutes into a stream. In this guide, we will provide a list of solutions to help you fix this issue.

Twitch can display the error 4000 due to a number of issues which include “a struggle” to share your computer’s resources, mostly audio, with another stream.

This causes Twitch to break down and eventually indicates an error that the resource format is not supported.

With the cause of the error in mind, here is a list of solutions that will help you to troubleshoot and fix this problem.

How to fix error 4000 on Twitch

  1. Close other media players or streams
  2. Refresh the stream
  3. Unplug any audio hardware then plug it back
  4. Change your audio card input to the primary audio driver
  5. Use the twitch popout player
  6. Change autoplay settings on Chrome

Method #1: Close other media players or streams

Close any media player or stream that may be playing on another browser before you reload twitch. In most cases, Twitch won’t load when another media stream has taken over a resource that it needs in order to stream.

If you have closed the streams and media players but the problem still persists, go to the Task Manager on your computer and close all the open apps. Reopen your browser again and try to play a twitch stream.

Method #2: Refresh the stream

A simple solution such as restarting your playback can solve this twitch error. Your computer could have disconnected from the internet while streaming and that led to this error appearing.

If restarting the playback doesn’t solve the problem, you should refresh your browser.

You can also open twitch on another browser or tab and attempt streaming from it. If it works on another browser, there could be compatibility issues with plugins on your previous browsers.

Method #3: Unplug any audio hardware then plug it back

If you have any audio hardware, whether it is a pair of headphones or an external speaker, unplug it since it could be preventing your twitch stream from working.

Once you remove the audio hardware, restart your stream or your browser. You can plug in your headphones or speakers once the twitch media source not supported error goes away.

This error can show up if you have connected your computer to a Bluetooth audio device. Make sure that you have disconnected them too.

Method #4: Change your audio card input to the primary audio driver

If you are using a Windows PC, you might face problems streaming on Twitch TV when an audio device switches the primary audio driver.

Follow these steps to switch back the audio input to the primary audio driver on your Windows computer.

  • Press the Start button
  • Type Sound and hit Enter
  • Click Playback
  • Find the primary audio input based on your audio driver
  • Click Set Default

Method #5: Use the twitch pop-out player

When twitch won’t load due to the error 4000, you can continue to enjoy streaming videos from the channel using the popout player.

While this isn’t a permanent fix to the problem, it can come in handy when you need to stream immediately but your twitch player isn’t loading.

To open the popout player on twitch, click on the gear icon at the bottom right side of the player and select Popout Player.

Method #6: Change autoplay settings on Chrome

Changing autoplay settings on Chrome can help to prevent audio and video from playing in the background to provide a fix for the video not supported error on twitch.

Follow these steps to change autoplay settings on Google Chrome.

  • Open a new tab on your Google Chrome browser
  • Type chrome:flags in the address bar and press enter
  • Scroll down to autoplay policy
  • Select Document user activation is required in the dropdown box

When this setting is turned on, videos and audio won’t play automatically when you visit a website. You will be required to click the play button on a video in order to play it.

That should do it. In the event Twitch still shows the “media not supported” error, get in touch with their support staff.
