Spotify keeps pausing randomly? Here’s how to fix it

Listening to music on Spotify can be one of the most relaxing or exciting experiences. However, there is a recent bug that is causing Spotify to keep pausing every time your screen locks on your iPhone or Android device.

When this happens, you have to tap the play button again for the music to continue playing. If you are streaming via Xbox or PlayStation, you will notice that the music stops whenever you navigate away from the app.

If Spotify keeps pausing randomly when playing music, you need to sign out of every device that is logged in to your account. You should also clear your cache and in some instances, you will have to reinstall the app.

In this guide, you will learn how to troubleshoot and fix Spotify when music keeps stopping.

Solution #1: Sign out everywhere

Spotify can keep stopping if the account is open on more than one device. To fix the error, you will have to close the other instances of the app. The good thing is that it is easy to do so. Follow these steps to sign out Spotify wherever you have it open.

  • Open your browser and navigate to spotify.com
  • Login with your credentials
  • Go to account overview, scroll down and click Sign Out Everywhere
  • Go back to the device you were using and sign in to Spotify

Spotify Premium not working

Your music should now be playing without pausing. However, if this step doesn’t solve your issue, try out the following fixes.

Solution #2: Revoke Access to an external speaker

If you are using Bluetooth speakers or headphones, they could be the reason your Spotify app is stopping whenever your phone screen locks. Follow these steps:

  • Log in to your Spotify account
  • Go to Account > Apps
  • Next to your speaker’s name, click Revoke Access

You should then try playing music from Spotify without these speakers. If it works fine, then poor connectivity could have caused the problem and the speakers will need to be reconnected. If the problem persists after reconnection, then you should replace your headphones.

Solution #3: Disable Battery Saver mode

Battery saver mode can cause Spotify to go off on your phone or Xbox whenever you leave the app. Follow these steps to disable battery saver mode on Spotify:

  • On your device, go to Settings > Battery
  • Select Battery optimization
  • Click the dropdown menu, select App apps, and choose Spotify
  • Change the settings to Don’t Optimize

Solution #4: Reinstall the app

Spotify could be pausing due to corrupted files on your computer. If this is the case, you have to uninstall the app and then reinstall it. If you are using Windows PC, follow the steps below to uninstall Spotify.

  • Hit the Windows button and click Settings
  • Click Apps
  • Scroll down and click Spotify
  • Click Uninstall
  • Wait for the installation to finish
  • On your browser, go to the official Spotify website and download the latest version of the app.

Wait for the installation to finish before you open the app and try playing music. If music keeps pausing, then go to the next step.

Solution #5: Update your Android app

Spotify might become problematic when you are using it on an outdated version of Android. Follow these steps to update Android:

  • Ensure that your device is connected to Wi-Fi
  • Open Settings > About Phone
  • Under Software Update, select Check now for the update
  • Wait for the process to complete and tap Install Now

Solution #6: Restart your device or router

Restarting your router or your Android device can help solve the issue for you. In the case of your router, disconnect the device from the power source and wait for about 1 minute before reconnecting.

To restart your device, hold down the power button until your Android device turns off. You should then wait for about a minute before you restart it.

If these steps haven’t solved your problem yet and Spotify keeps pausing, you should disable any app that clears the cache. If it still doesn’t work, consider getting in touch with Spotify support.
