Streaming video through Roku is convenient when it is working. You get to enjoy the show or the movie you are watching in HD quality. But when buffering starts, it can be really annoying.
The video you are watching will continuously stop and start. If the video is long, the whole experience becomes boring. When Roku keeps buffering, there may be several factors that can explain the problem.
Why does Roku buffer constantly?
Repeated buffering is sometimes a result of a technical problem with the internet service provider. It can also happen when you have connected too many devices on the same network.
In other cases, you are experiencing the issue because your internet speed is too slow. When that happens, channels won’t open, and you may not watch any video. So, how do you fix buffering issues on Roku?
How to fix the buffering issue on Roku
Here is a list of solutions for this issue:
1. Run a speed test
Your internet speed must be fast enough to play videos on Roku. If the picture quality of your video is 720p, you need a minimum speed of 2Mbps to stream.
For 1080p, you need at least 3Mbps. For 4K, it requires 25Mbps. Otherwise, you will notice a constant buffer whenever you play videos.
Run an internet speed test to check how fast your network is. Roku has an in-built feature that allows you to check your home network connection and the internet. From your remote:
- Press the Home button
- Scroll to Settings
- Select Network
- Select Check Connection
The device will test the signal and strength of your connection. That process will be successful if the message presents itself as “Connection check was successful.” If you are using a wired connection, you will see the results of your Internet Download Speed.
Note that you will be unable to check connection if your device is not connected to the internet or if the signal is on and off. Connect it to the internet and try again.
2. Restart your Roku device
Some streaming problems can go away with a simple restart of the device. To restart your Roku player:
- Go to Settings
- Select Systems
- Select System Restart
You can also restart your Roku TV by going to Settings > System > Power > System Restart.
You also have the option of unplugging the Roku streaming stick from its power source and plugging it back. Once powered, start it and try streaming again.
3. Restart your router
If your router constantly drops the Wi-Fi connection, restart it. Check instructions from the router manufacturer or ISP on how to restart. Or, unplug it from the power source and plug it back in.
You can also press the reset button on the device. Restarting should fix Wi-Fi problems and other connection issues, unless the issue lies with the network provider or your router is broken.
4. Disconnect other devices from your network
If other devices such as smartphones and laptops are using the same network to connect to the internet, this will create bandwidth problems.
Where bandwidth is too low, the solution is to disconnect the other devices from the network.
But if the bandwidth is low because too many people in your neighborhood are using the same cable line, there is not so much you can do.
If Roku keeps loading whenever you play a video, the problem could be your network or internet connection.
Check to ensure you have a connection to the internet. But if your ISP is experiencing a technical problem, you will have to wait until they fix it.
