Have you ever wished you could watch videos on your car’s infotainment system? That wish is soon coming true with Google set to roll out YouTube video playback on Android Auto.
During the Google I/O 2026 event, Google unveiled several updates that are coming to the latest version of Android Auto. Among these updates is the introduction of video apps, allowing you to stream videos on your car’s infotainment screen.

Video apps have been one of the most anticipated updates on Android Auto. Google initially announced that it would include support for video apps and browsers on Android Auto in 2025, and one year later, the wait is over.
First time Google has allowed video apps on Android Auto
The upcoming updates will be the first time Google has allowed video apps on Android Auto. For years, the tech company had turned off the video playback feature on cars, mostly for safety reasons.
However, going forward, you will be able to watch videos in your car, with YouTube being one of the first video apps that Google has confirmed will be on Android Auto.
That being said, not all vehicles will support video playback. According to Google, video playback will be available at up to 60 frames per second; this means that your infotainment system must have a high-resolution display, capable of handling smooth playback.

Already, Google has mentioned some of the car brands whose Android Auto systems will support the video apps. These include Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ford, Kia, Renault, Volvo, Skoda, and Hyundai.
YouTube video playback only available when the car is parked
Google may be rolling out YouTube video playback on cars, but the tech company has implemented several restrictions.
You will only be able to use the video playback feature when your car is in park mode. Once you start driving, compatible video apps will switch to audio-only mode.
The playback restriction is designed for safety to ensure that you don’t get distracted by watching videos when driving.
However, the feature is also very practical as it means that you can enjoy watching videos when idling in your car, for example, when waiting in parking lots, taking a break from work, waiting to pick up kids from school, or charging your EV vehicle.
Other Android Auto updates
Video playback is not the only update coming to Android Auto; Google has rolled out several features designed to improve the user experience.
These new features include an immersive navigation mode, with 3D maps that show terrain, buildings, traffic lights, stop signs, and more. Google has also upgraded the audio technology, with Dolby Atmos spatial sound now available on compatible vehicles and apps.
Other updates include customizable wallpapers, widgets, and a revamp of popular music apps such as YouTube Music, Spotify, PocketFM, and Amazon Music.
