Is your Xfinity remote flashing green and then red? This is often a sign that something is wrong with your remote control.
Low batteries are one of the top reasons your remote might flash green and then red.

However, this can also happen due to several other reasons, such as your remote being out of range, a physical barrier blocking the remote signal, a software glitch, physical damage, and more.
If your Xfinity remote is not working, below is everything you need to troubleshoot and fix the issue.
Basic troubleshooting tips
Before attempting advanced fixes for an Xfinity remote that is flashing green and then red, try the following basic troubleshooting tips:
- Check that your remote batteries are not low. If unsure, open the back cover and replace the batteries with new ones.
- Move closer to your TV box. Your remote will not work if you are too far away from it, especially if the batteries are running low.
- Check that there are no barriers between your Xfinity remote and your TV box. Barriers can block the signal from your remote, causing it not to work.

If none of these solutions work, you can try the advanced troubleshooting tips below:
1. Reset your Xfinity remote and TV box
A software (or firmware) glitch or bug can cause connectivity issues between your TV Box and Xfinity remote, causing it (remote) not to work. Fortunately, you can easily fix this problem by resetting your remote and TV box.
To reset your Xfinity remote:
- Open the back cover and remove the batteries.
- Press and hold the power button (on the remote control) for a few seconds.
- Wait 30-60 seconds, then re-insert the batteries, carefully inserting them with the correct polarity.
To reset your TV or TV box
- Unplug the power cable from your TV box.
- Press and hold the power button (on your TV box) for a few seconds.
- Wait 30-60 seconds, plug in the power cable, and turn on the box.
After you have completed both reset procedures, try using your Xfinity remote to see if the problem resolves.
2. Factory reset your remote
If your remote is still not working after a soft reset, you could try factory resetting it. Factory resetting your Xfinity remote will wipe all its settings, which can help fix several problems that could be causing it not to work.
To factory reset your remote:
- First, ensure your TV box and TV are turned on.
- Press and hold the “Setup” button on your remote control until the status light changes from red to green or blinks. NOTE: For some remote models, you might need to press different buttons, like A and D or Info and Home.
- Once the status light changes color or blinks, press 9-8-1 on your remote (for the XR16 Xfinity remote, you should press “Power,” then “Back arrow,” and then “Volume Down.”
- If the reset is successful, your remote will flash green twice (some remotes might flash blue three times or produce a beep sound.)
NOTE: Factory resetting your Xfinity remote will unpair it from your TV box, but it should automatically pair back with your device once the process is complete.
However, you might need to repair your remote to work, especially if you are using it with another device, such as a TV or a non-Xfinity cable box.
To do this:
- Ensure your TV box and TV are turned on.
- Press and hold the Xfinity and Info (i) on your remote control (or “Setup,” depending on the remote model) until the status light flashes.
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions and enter the pairing code that appears on your TV screen.
- Try using your remote to see if the pairing has worked.
You can also pair your Xfinity remote using the Remote Code Lookup tool.
To do this:
- Access the Remote Code Lookup tool on your web browser.
- Select your Xfinity remote from the list of remotes and click “Continue.”
- Select the type of device you want to pair your remote to and its brand, then click “Continue.”
- Follow the pairing instructions for your remote and use the provided code (list of codes) to complete the pairing process.
Once your remote is paired, you should be able to use it successfully without flashing green and then red.
3. Check your Xfinity remote for damage
Physical damage is another reason your remote might not be working. This can occur in case of a fall, liquid damage, if your remote is sat on, etc.
You can start by checking for signs of physical damage like cracks, dents, and broken parts.
You can also perform the IR signal test by launching the camera app on your phone, pointing the remote control towards the camera, and pressing any button. If the remote is working, the infrared signals should be visible on your camera.
Unfortunately, if your remote is damaged, there is not much you can do about it. Therefore, you should visit your nearest Xfinity service center (or a retail store selling Xfinity products) and pick up a new replacement remote.
