Google has fixed a sudden problem affecting 1st-gen Chromecast dongles

Google has released a fix for 1st-gen Chromecast dongles after a technical problem stopped many users from casting content from popular apps this month.

This quick fix is good news for people who still use the 2013 Chromecast in their homes.

What went wrong with the 1st-gen Chromecast dongles?

The issue started in mid-May 2026, when many people reported that their original Chromecast no longer showed up as a casting option in apps like YouTube, HBO Max (now Max), Paramount+, and Chrome.

Some apps still worked, but others did not recognize the device at all. Many long-time users worried that their Chromecast had finally stopped working for good after years of use.

The 1st-gen Chromecast, launched in 2013, let users turn regular TVs into streaming devices with a simple “cast” button and no remote.

People using the Chromecast in bedrooms, kitchens, or on extra TVs suddenly lost access to streaming. Many had to find workarounds, like connecting laptops or watching on their phones.

The 1st-gen Chromecast stopped getting software and security updates in 2023, when Google officially ended support and warned that performance might get worse. Still, many people kept using the reliable, low-power device until this recent problem.

What does this fix mean for future app updates?

The fix brings back casting for now, but future updates from apps like Netflix, YouTube, or Disney+ could cause new problems since Google can no longer update the dongle directly. Security is also a concern, as unpatched issues could put home networks at risk, though no specific threats have been reported so far.

If your 1st-gen Chromecast is affected, try unplugging it for 30 seconds and make sure your casting apps are up to date. If problems continue, you can try a factory reset using the button on the device, then set it up again in the Google Home app.

However, Google says you should not reset if the fix has already worked.

This incident happened as Google made other changes to Chromecast support. Some users were confused when a support page suggested updates would stop for most models except Chromecast with Google TV (HD). Google later explained it will keep providing important security updates for active devices.

The 4K Chromecast with Google TV is also getting new Gemini AI features, showing that Google is focusing on its newer devices.

For people on a budget or with several devices at home, this fix extends the 1st-gen Chromecast’s usefulness for now. However, to ensure continued reliability and access to new features, consider upgrading soon to a newer model.

Newer Chromecast models, like Chromecast with Google TV, offer full app menus, voice remotes, and regular updates.

For now, the fix means millions of households can keep using their classic 1st-gen Chromecast dongles, even if they are not ready or able to buy something new.
