When the same streaming service appears on its own website, Prime Video Channels and Roku, the monthly price does not tell the whole story.
Where you subscribe determines which app you use. It decides who handles your payment, whether annual plans are available, and where you must cancel.
The best choice depends on whether you value flexibility or prefer keeping several services inside one app.
1. Direct subscriptions
A direct subscription starts on the streaming service’s official website or app. This option works with all services. These are Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Peacock, HBO Max, Paramount+, Apple TV, ESPN, Crunchyroll, BritBox, Shudder and most live-TV platforms.
Going direct usually gives you the widest plan selection. You are more likely to find annual billing, student prices, ad-supported tiers, bundles, and limited-time offers that a third-party marketplace does not carry.
Your account also belongs directly to the service. You could sign in to its app on any supported device, manage profiles through the provider, and contact the correct company when billing or playback fails.
2. Prime Video Channels
Prime Video Channels lets you add other streaming libraries to the Prime Video app. Current US options include:
- HBO Max, Apple TV, Peacock Premium Plus, Paramount+, STARZ and MGM+
- Crunchyroll, AMC+, BET+, BritBox, ViX Premium and Wonder Project
- FOX One, CNN All Access and PBS Kids
Amazon also sells combined subscriptions, including HBO Max with Cinemax, Hallmark+ with STARZ and BritBox with MGM+. These packages could cost less than buying both services separately.
You receive one Amazon bill and browse the added libraries without changing apps. Some channels include a live feed alongside their on-demand catalogue. Amazon says customers without a Prime membership could purchase many Prime Video subscriptions, although some add-ons still require Prime or a Prime Video membership.
3. Roku
Roku provides two ways to pay for streaming. You could subscribe inside a provider’s standalone Roku app, or buy a Premium Subscription through The Roku Channel. The second option is the closer match to Prime Video Channels.
The Roku Channel’s subscription selection includes mainstream and specialist services such as Apple TV, HBO Max, Paramount+, STARZ, AMC+, MGM+, Crunchyroll, BET+, Hallmark+, discovery+, Shudder, BritBox, Acorn TV, ViX Premium, Sundance Now, Curiosity Stream and UP Faith & Family.
The Roku Channel does not charge a base membership fee. You only pay for the subscriptions you add. Your Roku account handles billing, while programmes from those services play inside The Roku Channel.
Which subscription method is best?
None of the three routes is always the cheapest. But here are a few things to know:
Direct subscription is best overall
Subscribe directly when you want the full plan menu, annual billing, provider bundles, or the freedom to use the service’s official app everywhere. It also avoids confusion over whether Amazon or Roku controls your account. This is the safest choice for a service you expect to keep throughout the year.
Prime Video Channels is best for one-app viewing
Choose Prime Video Channels when Prime Video is already your main streaming app. It brings supported libraries, live feeds and payments into one account. It works especially well when Amazon offers a useful two-service bundle. Check that the channel includes your preferred plan before subscribing.
Roku Is best for Roku households and short deals
Roku Premium Subscriptions suit households that spend most of their viewing time in The Roku Channel. The large selection and regular sales make it useful for trying a niche service for a month or two. Direct billing remains the better choice when you need an annual plan or full access through the provider’s own app.
Note: Existing subscriptions do not automatically transfer between these options. To move from direct billing to Amazon or Roku, wait for it to expire and start a new one through your chosen platform.
