After a six-month break, Google is finally releasing a major update for its premium set-top box this week. The new Google TV Streamer update includes a big smart home upgrade that changes how your household gadgets work together.
If you bought this device hoping for regular updates, you have probably been frustrated by how little attention it has received. Before this update, users were stuck with the same software since last October.

The new over-the-air update, called build version UTTK.260317.003, is only 219MB but brings a lot of improvements.
Google says the update includes “bug fixes and performance improvements.” But tech experts found that it also adds Thread 1.4 networking technology.
What is Thread 1.4?
Thread is a low-energy wireless system for smart home devices. It lets your gadgets talk to each other directly, creating a network that keeps working even if your Wi-Fi goes down.
The new version makes setting up devices much easier.
It has always been tough to connect apps and accessories from different brands on one secure network.
Thread 1.4 solves this problem by requiring devices to share credentials across different tech brands. To help with this, Google added a new menu option called “Share Thread network credentials” in the TV’s internet settings.
When you select this new option and confirm your identity with your phone or a PIN, the streaming box creates a secure QR code on your TV screen.
Now, you can just open your phone’s camera, scan the TV screen, and quickly connect your smart home setup to new devices. This means you don’t have to type long security keys or deal with connection errors.
This feature puts Google on par with Samsung and Apple, who also support the universal Matter smart home standard. Now, your Google streaming box can easily connect with Apple or Samsung border routers.
This lets you combine your gadgets into one system instead of having separate, competing networks.
Beyond making your smart light bulbs react faster, this long-awaited patch is critical for safety and device security. Before this week’s urgent rollout, the device was left exposed, running a very outdated security patch from August of last year.
The new update brings your system up to the April 2026 security level, fixing eight months of known security issues. Update as soon as possible to stay safe.
