Many European Disney+ users are surprised to find that 4K streaming is no longer available on their TVs. After several court orders, Disney+ has started removing 4K features across Europe.
As a result, Disney+ has quietly downgraded its top-tier subscribers from Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+ to basic 1080p Standard Dynamic Range (SDR). These main features are unavailable. However, the €15.99-per-month Premium price has stayed the same, so subscribers are still paying full price for lower quality.

What changed for European Disney+ 4K subscribers?
People who have spent a lot on 4K OLED TVs and high-end soundbars notice the downgrade right away. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ usually adjust brightness, contrast, and color for each frame to create a more lifelike and vibrant picture.
Now, movies such as Avatar, Star Wars, and Marvel blockbusters only stream in standard 1080p SDR in many European countries. These include Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Poland. 3D playback on supported headsets is also disabled.
Audio features like Dolby Atmos are still available, but the main visual benefits of the Premium subscription have disappeared almost instantly.
The legal battle behind the Disney+ Premium 4K removal in Europe

This major change is due to a growing patent dispute between The Walt Disney Company and InterDigital, a technology licensing company. InterDigital owns important patents for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265), which is the technology streaming services use to send 4K and HDR video online.
The Düsseldorf chamber of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) has issued orders that stop Disney from using these video compression methods in certain European countries unless they get a license.
Instead of making a licensing deal like Amazon Prime Video and other competitors, Disney decided to turn off 4K and HDR streaming to follow the court’s orders.
Why there have been silent updates from Disney
Many subscribers feel that Disney did not clearly communicate these changes. The company did not send any email alerts to let people know about the lower service quality.
Disney quietly changed its online help center and support pages. The company removed mentions of Dolby Vision and 4K playback but still charges the highest prices. Many subscribers only found out about the downgrade when their smart TVs did not switch to HDR mode during streaming.
What can you do as a subscriber?
Consumer rights groups in Europe, such as the Lower Saxony Consumer Protection Agency, are now getting involved. They are telling subscribers that they are paying for features Disney is not providing.
According to consumer protection laws, if a company removes major features without lowering the price, it is a serious breach of contract. Legal experts recommend that affected users act quickly:
- Ask for a partial refund or discount: Reach out to Disney+ customer support to report the loss of 4K/HDR and request a price adjustment or a partial refund for the month.
- Downgrade your subscription: Change to the Standard plan (1080p Full HD) so you do not pay extra for Premium features that are not available right now.
- Request an immediate cancellation: If you paid for an annual plan because of 4K support, you have the right to cancel now and get a full refund for the unused months.
