The Masire family has graced our Netflix screens for two seasons, and we are eagerly waiting for season 3.
Kings of Joburg was the creative work of the late producer Shona Ferguson, who played Simon Masire, the criminal kingpin of the Masire family.
Shona died of Covid-19-related complications in July 2021, just as season 2 was in the pre-production stages.
In an interview, Connie Ferguson, Shona’s wife and co-producer of the show, expressed how difficult it would be to film without her husband.
However, six months later, together with the other show producer and scriptwriter, they rewrote and directed season 2 of Kings of Joburg in honour of Shona.

Season 2 picks up after Simon (Shona Ferguson) suddenly disappears, and Mogomotsi ‘Mo’ Masire (played by Zolisa Xaluva) takes over as the kingpin.
This season captures the family’s power struggle and their need to free themselves from the curse of the Masire mermaid.
The last episode ends on a cliffhanger as Tlotlo ( Tk Sebothoma) turns against Mo, and Veronica Masire (Connie Ferguson) shows another side of herself in a surprising turn of events.
Season 3 possible teasers
Official communication on season 3 has not been made on any of the film’s social media platforms, but on an Instagram story, Connie announced that Netflix has renewed the show. The story was posted on Monday, April 1st, 2024.
Some of the show’s actors, like Nnekwa Tsajwa, have posted images of themselves on set with the hashtags #working #kingsofjoburg #Netflix, implying that season 3 is already in production.
Potential Plot, cast, and storyline for Season 3
Since season 2 ended on a cliffhanger, season 3 is expected to continue delving into the Masire family’s struggles and secrets.
It’s rumoured that new cast members will be introduced in season 3. As much as there is no confirmation from the production team, we expect most of the cast to return in season 3.
Production has remained silent, but as fans, we remain optimistic that the show will air sometime soon.
