Cecily Tynan, the chief meteorologist for 6abc Action News, is retiring from the station after 31 years. The weather anchor announced her plans to retire in a 6abc newscast in July 2026.
Among the reasons she gave for her retirement is the desire to prioritize her family. Tynan also revealed that she wanted to step down while she was still healthy and active.

A long-standing plan to retire in 2026
The news that Cecily Tynan is retiring may come as a shock to her fans, but she has been planning to do so for a while now. Her colleagues at 6abc Action News knew her exit was looming, with Tynan having decided to retire in 2020 after renewing her contract.
While announcing her retirement, she also revealed that she wanted to prioritize spending time with her family:
“Both my children have graduated from high school. My daughter is going to college in less than a month, and she’ll be running cross country and track. And my husband and I, we plan to attend every single one of her meets. So, it’s the right time for me. It’s the right time for my family.”
Health is another top reason why Cecily Tynan is retiring from 6abc. She revealed that her plans to step down were sealed after she suffered a short-lived but intense episode of vertigo a few years back:
“I’m 57, which is relatively young, I guess, for retiring, but I wanted to retire while I’m healthy and active,” said Tynan.
Her last broadcast on the station will be on August 31, 2026.
Tynan’s long and successful career
Cecily Tynan has enjoyed a long and illustrious career, most of which she has spent at 6abc. She joined the station in 1995 and rose through the ranks to become the chief meteorologist in 2009.
Some of her career highlights have included becoming 6abc Action News first-ever weekend meteorologist and the first woman to hold the position of chief meteorologist.
She has also been instrumental in covering major weather events, including the 1996 Blizzard, Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Ida, and other weather disasters.
Besides presenting weather for 6abc Action News, she has also appeared on national TV for ABC News.
Cecily Tynan’s plans after retiring from 6abc
Tynan is planning to spend more time with her family after leaving 6abc. She has also revealed that she plans to have an active retirement; she is a former professional athlete who competed in marathons and water skiing.
“I’m looking forward to spending my winters in Florida water skiing, traveling and having lots of quality time with my husband, Greg; two adult children, Luke and Emma; and three rescue pups, Nala, Shelby and Charlie,” said Tynan.
