Netflix bypasses Siri and Alexa with proprietary AI voice search for Smart TVs

Netflix wants to help users avoid feeling overwhelmed by too many choices. To do this, they are testing a new, advanced AI voice search feature.

Most search systems only work if you know the exact title. Netflix’s new AI voice search, now in beta, lets you use more natural conversation instead.

With this feature, you can search for shows by describing your mood or even using abstract feelings, not just specific titles.

How the Netflix AI voice search feature works

Searching for shows with a TV remote has always been slow and awkward. Netflix’s new AI voice search uses semantic search, which understands what you really mean instead of just matching keywords.

In early tests, the AI could handle unusual requests like “funny kids’ shows about death” and suggested A Series of Unfortunate Events.

There is a new “Ask” button on the search screen, shown as a waveform icon. When you click it, you will see prompts like “I need a good cry,” “something for background noise,” or “help me stay awake.”

These prompts let you search without naming a specific show. The AI then picks options based on how you want to feel.

Why this matters for your privacy and experience

By building this technology itself instead of using Google Assistant or Alexa, Netflix is taking back control of how users search for shows.

This also means Netflix keeps your data within its own system. However, the beta version cannot yet connect to your personal viewing history.

So, for now, the AI looks through the whole library each time instead of recommending shows based on your past favorites.

Why you cannot use the Netflix AI voice search feature yet

Right now, only a small group of testers in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand can try the Netflix AI voice search. It works on certain devices, like Chromecast with Google TV and TCL Google TV models.

If you use Roku or Amazon Fire TV, you cannot try this feature yet. That is because of ongoing technical issues between streaming services and device makers.

What is next for Netflix’s AI voice search feature?

The AI can understand your voice, but for now, it only replies with text on the screen. Experts think Netflix will launch it worldwide by the end of 2026, once it adds more personalized features.

Still, this change means viewers can interact more with Netflix, as the platform aims to act like a digital assistant that understands your mood, not just your remote.
