Why Gen Zs keep cancelling streaming subscriptions — And what it means for streaming services

Streaming services rely heavily on subscriber retention and the willingness of subscribers to juggle multiple subscriptions. However, younger generation viewing habits are breaking this model, with many Gen Zs increasingly cancelling their streaming subscriptions.

According to a 2026 audience insights report by IGN Entertainment, many young people treat streaming platforms as temporary stops. As a result, many of them are willing to subscribe to a platform, watch something, then cancel and move on to another platform.

Many Gen Zs are chasing single titles

One of the driving factors of the Gen Z subscription hopping is the chase for titles. According to the IGN Entertainment report, 59% of Gen Zs are likely to subscribe to a streaming platform to watch their favorite show or movie, then unsubscribe when they are done.

Additionally, 59% of Gen Zs actively commit to binge-watching a show on the same day it is released. Therefore, the timeline between subscribing and unsubscribing is pretty fast.

Shifting attention

Shifting of attention is another reason why many Gen Zs keep cancelling streaming subscriptions.

According to the IGN report, many Gen Zs spend a huge chunk of their time on gaming, social media, or on platforms like YouTube.

On top of that, many young people are likely to go to a theatre to watch movies, where they will treat such events as social events.

Subscription fatigue and financial pressures

Subscription fatigue is another top reason why many Gen Zs keep cancelling subscriptions.

According to data by CivicScience, 87% of Gen Zs have reported feeling subscription fatigue, with 37% of young subscribers cancelling a streaming service for this reason. A further 29% of Gen Zs have also considered cancelling a subscription due to subscription fatigue.

Besides subscription fatigue, financial pressures are also a leading cause of subscription cancellation.

Therefore, in an effort to save money, many Gen Zs are turning to free streaming alternatives, with a study by FreeWheel and GWI revealing that nearly 46% of young audiences now watch free channels.

Platform loyalty is dead among the young generation

The subscription-hopping viewing habits of Gen Zs are creating waves in the streaming industry, especially with regard to platform loyalty. The IGN Entertainment report emphasizes that subscription loyalty is dead.

Subscriptions are no longer expressions of loyalty; they are tools activated by intent.

The change in viewing habits has left many streaming platforms scrambling to adapt. Consequently, they are now investing in quality content, especially franchises and titles that can engage viewers for longer.

The constant subscription cancellation by Gen Zs is likely a nightmare for many streaming platforms. However, it is a welcome change for many viewers, as it means that streaming services are not investing heavily in ensuring each title they release is highly engaging.
