If you use HBO Max or Paramount+ or both, a big change is on the way. On April 23, 2026, Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders voted to approve Paramount Skydance’s deal to buy the streaming giant.
However, this merger is not done yet.

So, nothing changes for you today. But here are the possible upcoming changes:
HBO Max and Paramount+ could become one streaming service
A future combined service could combine HBO shows and Warner Bros. movies. It will also include DC titles, Discovery content, Paramount movies, CBS programming, Showtime, MTV, Nickelodeon, and more under the same roof.
Paramount has said the merger would create more choice for consumers across its streaming platforms and major franchises.
You may get more content, but you may also get fewer choices
A combined app sounds useful on paper. You may not need to jump between two different streaming services to find what you want. If the platforms are merged well, you could get a bigger catalogue in one place, with major brands such as Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Top Gun, Mission: Impossible, DC, SpongeBob SquarePants, and more.
But there is another side to this. Critics say that when fewer companies control more of the streaming market, consumers end up with fewer choices.
Your price could change later
There is still no clear public rollout plan for what the final service would look like for users. The name is unclear. The design is unclear.
The timing of any app merger is also unclear. That means you should be careful about anyone online who talks like the full plan is already locked in.
Still, price is one of the biggest questions. A combined catalogue will, of course, charge more if it offers a much bigger library. Less competition in streaming always pushes prices higher.
Movie releases could also be affected
This deal is not only about streaming apps. It also affects the movie business.
AP reported that David Ellison wants the combined company to grow its film slate to more than 30 movies a year while keeping Paramount and Warner Bros. as stand-alone studio operations.
If the newly-formed company sticks to that plan, some movies will spend more time in theaters before they hit streaming. At the same time, a stronger combined studio could mean more big titles eventually landing on the company’s streaming platform.
What you should do right now
For now, the smart move is to stay calm. You do not need to change your subscription just because the shareholder vote happened. The deal still needs approval, and the companies have not yet given users a final product roadmap.
