If you have tried to watch Hulu while traveling, you may have encountered a frustrating error message.
One day, your account works perfectly at home. The next, you are at a hotel or a friend’s place and suddenly get a warning that your device is not part of your household.
Streaming while traveling should be straightforward, but Hulu’s location rules can be confusing without proper guidance.
This guide explains Hulu On The Go, how it works, and how to avoid streaming problems when you are away from home.
1. What is Hulu On The Go?
Hulu On The Go lets subscribers watch movies, shows, and live TV when they are away from their main home.
With a standard Hulu subscription, you can stream on up to two devices at once, like your phone, tablet, or laptop. If you have Hulu + Live TV, the rules are a bit stricter.
Hulu links your Live TV subscription to your Home Network, which is your main Wi-Fi or internet at home. This helps protect local channels and sports, but it also means there are extra rules for watching when you are away.
2. Mobile devices vs. living room devices
The most important thing to know is how Hulu sorts your devices:
- Mobile devices
Mobile devices are made to travel with you. You can take your phone, tablet, or laptop anywhere in the U.S. and stream Hulu or live TV without changing your account settings.
To keep live TV working on your mobile device when you are away, Hulu asks you to check in. Just open the Hulu app on your device while connected to your home Wi-Fi at least once every 30 days.
If you forget to check in within 30 days, live streaming on that device will stop until you reconnect to your home Wi-Fi.
- Living room devices
Living room devices like Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or PlayStation are meant to stay in one place.
If you take your Roku stick and use it at a vacation rental or second home, Hulu will notice it is on a different internet network. You will probably see an error that says, “This TV doesn’t seem to be part of the Hulu Household for this account.”
3. How many streams can you use On The Go?
How many streams you get depends on your plan and any add-ons:
- Standard accounts let you stream on two screens at the same time.
- If you have Hulu + Live TV and pay for the Unlimited Screens add-on, you can stream on as many devices as you want at home. When you are away, you can stream on up to three mobile devices at once.
If you go over these out-of-home limits, you will see a “too many streams” error message on your device.
4. What happens when you travel for long periods?
If you are taking a long trip, going on vacation, or moving, you have two main options:
- Use “I’m Away From Home”
When you open Hulu on a TV-connected device outside your main home, you can choose the “I’m Away From Home” option. Hulu will send a one-time code to the account holder’s email. Once you enter it, you can stream for a while.
- Update your home network
If you are moving for good or staying somewhere new for a few months, you can change your Home Network.
You can only change your official Home Network four times in a 12-month period. If you go over this limit, you will have to wait until the year is up to change it again.
5. Account sharing and extra members
Hulu does not allow account sharing outside one household. If friends or family in another home use your login on their TV, Hulu will eventually block them.
If you want to share your account with someone outside your home, Hulu has an Extra Member Add-on. For a monthly fee, you can add another user so they can stream on their own devices without changing your home network settings.

- If you want to watch on a big screen at a hotel or rental, stream Hulu on your mobile device and cast it to the TV with AirPlay or Chromecast instead of logging in directly on the TV.
