FreeCast launches FreeCast Cities, a free option for local TV

FreeCast has announced FreeCast Cities. It is a platform that brings together your local broadcast stations, free internet channels, and paid subscriptions in one place.

The service is currently in beta and is built on a simple promise: “One City. One Login. All Your Television.” It aims to end the hassle of switching between different apps, which has made watching TV feel like a chore.

How does FreeCast Cities work?

The service is taking on one of the biggest problems for cord-cutters: fragmentation. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all app, FreeCast Cities customizes the experience for each of the 210 Designated Market Areas (DMAs) in the United States.

When you log in, you will see a digital hub designed for your hometown. That includes local news, weather, and the broadcast channels you once got with an antenna or basic cable.

This is a big effort to connect traditional over-the-air TV with today’s digital streaming options.

One of the best parts for most households is that it is free to use. In addition to local live broadcast stations, FreeCast Cities offers hundreds of free ad-supported streaming TV channels, plus a library of free movies and on-demand shows.

The company uses Broadcast Enabled Streaming Technology (BEST) to keep local feeds running smoothly on your smart TVs, phones, computers, and streaming boxes, all without extra hardware.

The platform also works with the paid apps you already use. FreeCast Cities includes a search tool called SmartGuide, so you can look up a movie or actor across all your live channels and connected streaming accounts at once.

There is also a tool called MediaPay that lets you buy, manage, and track your paid subscriptions in one place. Instead of getting separate bills from Netflix, Hulu, or Disney+ at different times, you can handle them all through this central hub.

FreeCast Cities will partner with DirecTV

In a move that could appeal to traditional satellite TV fans, the platform also plans to add DirecTV residential offers.

With this partnership, eligible users can add premium live sports, movies, and networks over the internet using the FreeCast interface. You won’t need to install a satellite dish or rent special equipment, making it easier to adjust your TV package as needed.

Television has become increasingly fragmented across dozens of applications, subscriptions, and devices,” FreeCast CEO Bill Mobley stated during the announcement.

He said FreeCast Cities was created to remove that complexity and give viewers a more unified, local experience without the usual technical hassles.

When should viewers expect to access FreeCast Cities?

The platform will not launch everywhere at once. FreeCast is rolling it out gradually, bringing it to one to three cities at a time.

This careful approach lets the company make deals with local broadcasters and make sure regional programming works well before launching in your area.
