What happened to Tony DiNozzo’s character on NCIS?

Anthony D. “Tony” DiNozzo, Jr is a character from the CBS TV series NCIS portrayed by actor Michael Weatherly.

Tony is the senior field agent of the Major Case Response Team (MCRT), which is led by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), a former Marine Gunnery sergeant.

This team often investigates major crimes involving military personnel and deals with local law enforcement officers.

DiNozzo’s character background

In the series, Tony is a charismatic detective who excels at undercover jobs and resolving conflicts. He is, however, a certified ladies’ man who breaks hearts and is the typical Casanova.

The death of Agent Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander) and his subsequent relationship with Agent Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) bring about a shift in his attitude.

Tony, a former cop in Baltimore’s homicide division, was hired by NCIS after discovering that his partner, Danny Price, was a dirty cop.

Leaving NCIS

DiNozzo appeared regularly in the first 13 seasons of the series before departing in 2016 in the season 13 finale, “Family First.”

This last episode reveals that Tony has a child with Agent Ziva, and he chooses to raise his child. His decision to be a caregiver is guided by the alleged report that Agent Ziva died in a mortar attack. He finds out that Ziva is not dead but is in hiding.

However, he makes a brief appearance at the end of the season 21 episode “The Stories We Leave Behind,” paying tribute to Ducky Mallard (David McCallum).

He has also made guest appearances in the spin-offs NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans.

Matthew, who portrays Tony, had taken a step back from NCIS in real life because he felt like he had exhausted his character.
