What really happened to the Mama June show?

The Mama June Show is still on air and had an amazing season in 2024. It is scheduled to air new episodes beginning May 2025. The show follows the Shannon family members through life’s ups and downs in America.

It has been rebranded several times, mostly due to the chaotic lives of the family members. Mama June’s drug use has had a profound effect on the show.

She also associates with convicted criminals, which may not appeal to viewers, especially when children are involved. That has resulted in the cancellation and several rebrands of the Mama June show.

That said, it is very interesting and gives an amazing perspective into the lives of American families. Here is everything you should know about the Mama June Show.

Here Comes Honey Boo Boo

The Shannon family is known for their roles in reality TV. It all began in 2011 when June Shannon (Mama June) appeared on Toddlers & Tiaras with her daughter Tiana on TLC.

They were so charming that the family got a spinoff show on TLC called Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The show follows Alana, also known as Honey Boo Boo and her family.

It ran for four seasons before cancellation, but it generally received negative reviews from critics.  Many people saw it as exploitative and were horrified by things like Mama Juice giving Alana Redbull mixed with Mountain Dew.

The show was cancelled in 2014 after Shannon was seen with a sex offender, Mark Antony McDaniel. The sex offender had been convicted of aggravated child molestation and served a ten-year prison sentence.

Around the same time, Shannon admitted that her daughter Lauryn was the daughter of another convicted sex offender, Michael Anthony Ford. Michael Anthony was caught on the show To Catch a Predator and imprisoned for sexually exploiting minors.

Although TLC had shot several season 5 episodes, the show was cancelled.

Mama June: From Not to Hot

WeTV decided to make a spinoff of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo to document Mama June’s weight loss journey. Mama June lost 300 pounds, and the show follows her through the process.

It was a success and very inspirational, but in 2019, Mama June and Eugene Doak, her then-boyfriend, were arrested and charged with drug possession in Alabama. Eugene was also charged with domestic violence.

The show had to change to deal with the negative publicity.

Mama June: From Not to Hot – Family Crisis

The fourth season of Mama June: From Not to Hot was called Family Crisis and followed Mama June and the family as they dealt with her disappearance, arrest and charges.

The drug use and relationship problems Mama June had with Eugene affected the entire family. The entire season is focused on helping Mama June through recovery.

Mama June: Road to Redemption

For the fifth season WeTV dropped the Not to Hot phrase from the title and rebranded it to Mama June: Road to Redemption. The season begins with Mama June having been sober for six months and intending to return to her children’s lives.

This season follows Mama June’s struggle for the custody of Alana against Pumpkin and Josh. Although she is sober, Mama June is the reason for the conflict in this season.

Her recovery and health problems cause problems for the whole family, especially while navigating the COVID-19 epidemic.

Mama June: Family Crisis

WeTV again rebranded the show for the sixth season to Mama June: Family Crisis. Mama June, in this season, goes back to Alabama, and the family believes she is using drugs.

While the issues of drug use and the family conflict may not appeal to many people, the show still has a huge following.

Season 7

Mama June is set for season seven when viewers will find out whether she has remained sober or kept up her drug use. The first episodes of season 7 will start airing in May 2025.

Specials

Due to the popularity of the Mama June show, there have been several specials every time it rebranded, including Halloween and Christmas episodes.

Some of the popular specials include Too Big for TV, RedNeck Romance, Behind the Headlines and The Road So Far
