Hottle was 18 at the time of her death, with her acting career just starting; therefore, there was a lot about her that people don’t know. So, who was she really?

Below is everything to know about Kaylee Hottle, from her personal life and acting career to details of her tragic death.

Early life and her family’s history with deafness

Kaylee Hottle was born on March 17, 2008, in Atlanta, Georgia, to an all-deaf family; her mother and father are both deaf. Additionally, her father’s side of the family has four generations of deaf relatives.

Hottle was fluent in American Sign Language and attended the Texas School for the Deaf, where she competed in track and field.

A rising star in Hollywood

Hottle was a Hollywood rising star. She made her acting debut in the 2021 film Godzilla vs. Kong, where she portrayed Jia, a deaf orphan and the last remaining member of Skull Island’s Iwi tribe.

Jia became a fan favorite in the film franchise because of her ability to form a deep, non-verbal bond with King Kong, communicating with him in American Sign Language.

In 20254, Hottle reprised her role in the 2024 movie, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, where, once again, her character played a pivotal role in the film’s storyline.

Besides the Godzilla films, Hottle also appeared on an episode of the American crime drama series (2018 reboot version) Magnum P.I. In the show, she played Joon, the deaf niece of recurring character Jin Jeon (portrayed by Bobby Lee).

Kaylee Hottle was an advocate for inclusivity

Kaylee Hottle was an outspoken advocate for inclusivity, especially for people with hearing impairment. As one of the few deaf actors in major Hollywood projects, she was a trailblazer for authentic deaf representation.

She also served as a role model for young people, proving that there are no limits to what deaf actors can achieve.

I hope my role in the movie shows the young deaf girl that they can do anything. I aspire for them to understand that deafness isn’t the limit,” stated Hottle in an interview with Cherry Picks

Her tragic death in a car accident

Kaylee Hottle passed away on July 21, 2026, following a single-vehicle crash in Ijamsville, Maryland. The state’s medical examiner confirmed that her death was a result of injuries sustained during the crash

A press release from the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Hottle was one of the two passengers travelling in the vehicle, which veered off the road and struck a culvert. The driver and the other passengers survived, but Hottle was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to the statement from the Sheriff’s office, excessive speed was likely a factor in the crash.
