If you watch TV with a low-cost streaming stick or an unbranded Android box, there’s an important deadline coming up. Starting in September, the BBC will block BBC iPlayer on uncertified devices.
If your device is not on the BBC’s approved list, the app will stop working. You might see error codes or just a blank screen.
Here is what is changing, how it affects you, and how to check your device before September.
Why is the BBC doing this?
The BBC is updating its security rules to protect its broadcasts and meet digital copyright rules.
To use BBC iPlayer, your streaming device needs security approval from Google, called Play Protect, and a license from the BBC.
Cheap, off-brand TV boxes often use modified Android versions that skip these checks. Since the BBC can’t confirm they’re secure, it’s blocking them completely.
Who will be affected?
This change mostly affects people using:
- Unbranded Android boxes.
- Sideloaded apps or TV setups running altered or unofficial versions of the iPlayer app.
- Outdated streaming sticks whose manufacturers stopped releasing security updates.
If you use a major brand like an official Amazon Fire TV Stick, Roku, Chromecast with Google TV, or a standard Smart TV from Samsung, LG, or Sony, you are safe.
How to check if your TV box is safe
You do not need any technical skills to check your setup. Just follow these steps on your TV device:
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Click your Profile Icon in the top right corner.
- Select Settings > About.
- Look at the bottom for Play Protect Certification.
If it says “Device is certified,” you do not need to do anything. Your TV will keep working after September.
If it says “Device is not certified” or nothing appears, the app will stop working when September arrives.
What should you do before September?
If your device is not certified, updating or resetting the app will not help. To keep watching your favorite shows, you have two easy options:
- Upgrade to a certified stick
Popular choices like a Roku Express or Fire TV Stick cost about £20 to £30 and are fully supported.
- Cast from your phone
You can still use your current TV by opening BBC iPlayer on your phone or tablet and casting the video to your TV screen.
