Kayo Adopts Social Media Approach to Improve Its Sports Streaming Experience

Kayo Sports Australia has launched a thorough overhaul of its mobile and tablet applications. The platform will now feature social media-style characteristics in a bid to transform how sports fans interact with live events, highlights, and updates.

This new redesign matches how you already use platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

Kayo’s team worked through review feedback, bug reports, and analytics to design the UI refresh. Phased rollouts started with small user cohorts to test stability and gather feedback.

Updates are already being released to iOS and Android devices gradually, with a cross-platform release scheduled across tablets and the web.

What the refreshed Kayo design will include

Kayo’s latest update includes the following additions:

Moments player

A scrollable, vertical feed showcasing TikTok-like highlights. It’s the new way for you to catch key plays quickly. This feed lets fans instantly catch pivotal moments, goals, wickets, and tries, without watching entire games.

It also includes intuitive functionality: tap to expand a moment, replay it, or jump straight to live play. This will keep you engaged and informed throughout ongoing matches, without interrupting the flow.

Stories

This feature is similar to Instagram or Snapchat. It overlays vertical video snippets of ongoing live events directly on the homepage.

However, it not only showcases live moments but also builds social media-like narratives, combining visual depth with context. Here, you can see warm-up snippets, key plays, and behind-the-scenes clips, intensifying the drama of live events.

Team feeds and improved favourites

The app will now prompt you to add your favourites. This creates a personalized homepage showing content related to your selected teams.

Rather than navigating menus, you see schedules, news, stats, and live alerts dedicated to your teams, making the app feel tailored.

The updated “Enhanced Favourites” ensures that even with multiple selections, the content hierarchy reflects your true priorities.

For instance, the interface will place AFL when preferred over NRL. This minimizes content noise and boosts the relevance of suggestions.

Redesigned navigation and homepage

There are hero banners and intuitive menus that place live events front and center. This redesign brings ongoing live events to the prime screen area. Play titles, schedules, and direct links are easily visible, allowing you to jump straight into matches.

Backed by improved search tools, you can also quickly find live or on-demand content through keyword or team-based input.

Why this Kayo redesign matters

This streamlined interface reduces friction and enhances app usability. It also addresses long-standing user complaints, such as difficulty resuming playback, poor navigation, and app instability, reported repeatedly in forums.

According to Foxtel’s product streaming lead, Tom Blaxland, “Everything is conveniently housed in one place, eliminating the need to jump between apps or websites to catch up on games, explore highlights, or stay updated.

This is not just an app update, but a complete reimagining of how fans connect with the sports and shows they love.”

“Our mission has always been to deliver the ultimate sports viewing experience, and we know sport on mobile is very different from TV, so these new features are a direct reflection of that.

With features like the Moments Player and Stories, users can immerse themselves in highlights, updates, and bite-sized content that keeps them connected to the action anytime, anywhere,” he added.

Also, with new sports offerings entering platforms like Disney+, Kayo needs distinctive features to defend its market share.

This redesign eases interaction and convenience, situating Kayo as a specialized, immersive sports platform, not just another streaming option

Retention of Kayo brand innovations

Despite the shift toward social-style feeds, Kayo retains its original streaming strengths. The platform is known for:

  • SplitView: You can watch multiple live streams, up to four, simultaneously.
  • Key moments: This feature allows you to navigate highlights within game timelines.
  • Interactive stats: You get instantaneous game analytics that are overlaid with live and replay streams.
  • No spoilers and pop-out player: This element allows you to control content visibility and multitasking.

The above remain central in such a way that the platform improves rather than sacrifices its advanced and famous features.
