Why Mr. Throwback got cancelled — even with Steph Curry on board

In April 2025, it was revealed that Mr. Throwback had been cancelled. Peacock failed to renew the show despite Steph Curry’s involvement.

The TV show received pretty positive reviews, which, combined with its strong cast, set it up for success. Unfortunately, this was not meant to be, with Peacock cancelling the show after only one season.

Below is a look at all the reasons Mr. Throwback was cancelled and what, if any, options are available to fans of the show in the future.

The TV show suffered from low viewership

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mr. Throwback was cancelled due to low viewership.

The mockumentary show follows Danny Grossman (Adam Pally), a desperate memorabilia dealer who tries to find redemption by reconnecting with his childhood friend, NBA star Stephen Curry (who plays a fictionalized version of himself).

Mr. Throwback had every recipe for success, and its initial viewership metrics were strong, with the show ranking among the top 5 Peacock original comedy series on opening weekend.

However, the show’s viewership declined over time, ultimately leading to its cancellation.

Unfortunately, Peacock does not release viewership data for specific TV shows to the public. Therefore, it is impossible to know exactly how well or badly Mr. Throwback performed.

However, the mockumentary show never made it into the Nielsen streaming top 10 list, indicating poor viewership.

Another Peacock show, Based on a True Story, made it into Nielsen’s list at number 8 for its premiere week, but it was still cancelled. Therefore, it was doubtful that Mr. Throwback would be renewed, given its abysmal viewership.

Positive reception, but not enough viewers

While the Hollywood Reporter did confirm that Peacock cancelled Mr. Throwback due to low viewership, the streaming platform did not offer an official reason.

Therefore, in such cases, there is always speculation about various reasons that could have led to a show’s cancellation. However, in its reporting, The Hollywood Reporter was quick to clarify that Mr. Throwback’s quality did not factor into the show’s cancellation.

This claim is supported by the TV show’s reviews and ratings, which were mostly positive.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the show had a critic rating of 86% and an audience rating of 76%. The show also received decent reviews on other platforms, including an IMDb rating of 6.4/10 and a 62% score on Google.

Despite the positive reception, the mockumentary never garnered enough viewership.

Furthermore, while the show received positive reviews, the number of reviewers was relatively low. For example, on Rotten Tomatoes, it only had 14 critic reviews and fewer than 50 audience reviews.

Failed efforts to boost ratings

Peacock made several efforts to boost Mr. Throwback’s viewership from the start, launching the show around the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Steph Curry led the men’s basketball team to a gold medal.

The strategy paid off, with 77% of the Peacock accounts that watched the show on its opening weekend also watching the Olympics basketball event.

After viewership began to decline, Peacock aired the show on NBC, hoping to boost ratings. Unfortunately, this move did not pay off, and ultimately, the show was cancelled.

Steph Curry’s star power was not enough to save the show

One of the advantages Mr. Throwback boasted of was Stephen Curry’s star power. The show relied heavily on his real-life celebrity status and success as an NBA star, and even featured cameos and behind-the-scenes footage of his real-life NBA career.

Some audiences, however, were not impressed with Curry’s acting, with one critic stating, “As an actor, his [Curry’s] talents probably hit their ceiling with his TV commercials for Subway or Cars.com.”

Nonetheless, some audiences, and even his co-stars, praised his acting, with many viewers also noting that his natural presence and charm added a lot to the show.

Unfortunately, his involvement in Mr. Throwback and the exposure his celebrity status brought were not enough to raise viewership, ultimately leading Peacock to cancel the show.

Mr. Throwback could, in theory, be saved

Mr. Throwback ended on a cliffhanger, hinting at a potential continuation of the show’s story in season 2.

Additionally, the cast and crew of the show had expressed interest in continuing to work together before its cancellation, with Matthew Libman, the show’s creator, stating:

Hopefully, people watch it and love it and talk about it. Steph would love to do more. We would love to do more. Hopefully, people feel the same way.”

Therefore, it is not outside the realm of possibilities that Mr. Throwback’s story could continue. One way this could happen is if the creators found a new home for the mockumentary.

The other option is if Peacock were to pick up the show again. The second option seems unlikely, given that they had already cancelled the show.

However, The Hollywood Reporter piece on Mr. Throwback hinted that the NBA’s return to NBC and Peacock would give NBC Universal the perfect opportunity to, once again, capitalize on Steph Curry and the NBA’s popularity to boost the show’s ratings.

Unfortunately, the 2025/26 NBA season is already underway and airing on NBC and Peacock, so it’s unlikely the mockumentary will be revived on the platform.

Therefore, the only hope the show’s fans have is if another streaming platform picks it up. Whether this happens remains to be seen.
