NCIS: Tony & Ziva has been cancelled. Here’s why

Fans of the long-running NCIS spinoff, Tony & Ziva, which reunited Tony DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly, and Ziva David, played by Cote de Pablo, have officially been cancelled after only one season on Paramount+.

The news blindsided many fans who had hoped the revival would be the next big chapter for the iconic pair known as Tiva.  However, Tony & Ziva will not return for a second season.

Here’s a closer look at why.

A dream return that never quite took off

Tony & Ziva premiered exclusively on the Paramount+ streaming service on September 4, 2025,  and was one of the most eagerly awaited spin-offs in the NCIS universe, diverging from traditional CBS broadcasts.

The show followed Tony and Ziva as they navigated life in Paris, raising their daughter Tali while running a security firm amid international threats.

“The 10-episode series is the newest installment of the global NCIS franchise and will premiere on Thursday, September 4,  2025,l with three episodes, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Japan,” Paramount+ announced.

“ Following the premiere, new episodes will drop weekly on Thursdays, with the season finale on October 23, 2025.”

On paper and in early reviews, the show delivered by securing the number 2 spot on Paramount+’s and UK TV charts, highlighting the enduring popularity of the two absent from the main series since Seasons 11 and 17, respectively.

However, beautiful moments and glowing reviews weren’t enough to secure its future.

One of the most significant factors behind the cancellation was declining viewership as the series progressed.

The viewership fell lower and lower in the charts as  Tony & Ziva played out across 10 episodes.

For streaming platforms like Paramount+, viewer engagement and subscriber impact are everything.

A series can be critically successful, but if it doesn’t drive enough viewership,  especially relative to its cost, executives are often unwilling to commit to multiple seasons.

Therefore, the cancellation could have been impacted by the decline in numbers. However, Paramount+ has yet to provide an explanation on the matter.

Tony & Ziva cast and crew reactions

On December 19, 2025, Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo issued a joint statement expressing gratitude to the production team and fans at large.

“We feel incredibly lucky to have had the chance to play these characters once again and to tell the next chapter of Tony and Ziva’s story. Our deepest thanks go to our extraordinary cast, crew, writers, directors, and producers, and to our partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+ who helped make this dream a reality,” the announcement stated.

“But most of all, we want to thank the fans around the world who joined us on this adventure and finally got to see Tony and Ziva find their happily ever after.”

Additionally, Tony & Ziva’s showrunner, John McNamara, revealed to TV Insider that plans to alternate the finale were scrapped because the aired ending provided closure.

“We did leave Tony and Ziva in a happy place. They had gotten back together, they were raising their daughter together, and the future looked bright since they were no longer on the run, having cleared their name after Tony’s security company was framed,” she stated.
