Where does Michael Straham’s future stand amid GMA exit talks?

Michael Strahan has found himself at the centre of speculation about his future on Good Morning America (GMA)  nearly a decade after joining the show.

The former NFL player is reportedly earning more than $20 million annually from the show.

Strahan, whose contract is set to expire later this year, first joined GMA in 2016, alongside co-hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos.

However, recent reports have revealed that Strahan is set to sign a new contract with ABC’s  GMA, which will see a reduction in his hosting days on the show to fewer than five weekly.

Michael Strahan’s new contract and role changes

According to Semafor, the new contract is designed to accommodate Strahan’s dual roles, including his NFL coverage duties with Fox as an analyst.

Furthermore, the new changes will also allow him to spend more time focusing on family matters.

Over the last ten years, Strahan has managed demanding schedules, including cross-country travel during football season for his Fox NFL Sunday hosting, alongside his GMA duties.

Therefore, the new deal with ABC is anticipated to reduce his presence on GMA to less than five days a week.

This will allow him to accommodate other professional engagements and personal responsibilities.

Strahan’s decision to publicly share his daughter Isabella’s battle with medulloblastoma in late 2023 is a significant factor influencing Strahan’s decision to cut back on GMA to prioritise family.

Isabella, who is now cancer-free, revealed that she underwent three surgeries, four rounds of chemotherapy, and six weeks of radiation after diagnosis in an interview alongside Strahan in October 2024 with Town & Country.

“The last year is one we hope to forget, but at the same time it’s shown us a lot of important things about who she is and about who we are and about how we show up for each other as a family,” he said during the interview.

Similarly, Strahan became a grandfather when his eldest daughter, Tanita, gave birth to a son in September 2024.

She and Michael Jr are Strahan’s children with his first wife, Wanda Hutchins, to whom they were married between 1992 and 1996.

Final thoughts

This brings an end to the swirling rumours of his exit from the show that came months before and after GMA relocated its iconic studio after 26 years in the heart of Times Square, New York City, to a new, state-of-the-art facility in the Robert A. Iger building at 7 Hudson Square in downtown Manhattan.
