Who makes Westinghouse TVs? Everything you should know

Westinghouse TVs are among the most popular TV brands, known for affordable smart TVs running on the Xumo and Roku operating systems. They also have a lot of history, with the brand linked to an American industrial powerhouse.

The TVs were once made in the USA, but their manufacturer and manufacturing location have changed over the years. So, who makes Westinghouse TVs in 2025?

Below is a detailed look at who makes Westinghouse TVs, the brand’s history, ownership, current manufacturing location, and more.

A history of the Westinghouse TVs

The history of the Westinghouse television dates back to the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, founded by George Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1886.

The company was an industrial powerhouse, active in many sectors, including electrical production and distribution, home appliances, consumer electronics, and more.

Westinghouse entered the TV market sometime around 1949 with a tabletop black-and-white TV. In 1954, the company unveiled the first home color TV, which it sold for $1,295, approximately $15,000 in 2025.

In the 1960s, the Westinghouse Electric Company stopped manufacturing its own TVs. However, it continued to produce and sell tube TVs to manufacturers such as Motorola and Magnavox.

The company also stopped manufacturing other consumer electronics. However, it retained the trademarks to these products, which have been licensed to various manufacturers over the years.

One of these manufacturers was Westinghouse Digital LLC, a California-based company. It acquired the license to the Westinghouse TV brand, which it used on affordable LCD televisions built overseas.

Who makes Westinghouse TVs?

Westinghouse TVs are made by Westinghouse Electronics, LLC. Despite its name, it is not related to the original Westinghouse Electric Corporation.

Westinghouse Electronics is, instead, a subsidiary of Tsinghua Tongfang Co., Ltd., a public, state-owned company controlled by the Chinese government and Tsinghua University.

Westinghouse Electronics currently owns the license to manufacture and sell TVs under the Westinghouse brand. It acquired the license sometime around 2010, after the previous licensee, Westinghouse Digital LLC, went out of business.

Where are Westinghouse TVs made?

Westinghouse Electronics, LLC has its headquarters in Diamond Bar, California, United States. However, the TVs are manufactured overseas, primarily by third-party original equipment manufacturers.

One of these manufacturers is Tongfang Global, the company that owns Westinghouse Electronics, LLC, and has, for years, produced Westinghouse TVs in China.

In 2021, Westinghouse also entered the Indian market, licensing Super Plastronics Pvt. Ltd. (SPPL) to produce and sell Westinghouse TVs.

There are also unverified online reports that third parties, including Shenzhen MTC, a Chinese company, do manufacture Westinghouse TVs.

Is Westinghouse TV a good brand?

For decades, the Westinghouse brand has become famous for offering affordable TV models. However, that means that their TVs are not of premium quality when compared to top brands like Samsung and LG.

Consequently, Westinghouse television units have had some complaints, with users reporting poor audio and picture quality. The quality and reliability complaints were exceptionally high under the previous licensee, Westinghouse Digital, LLC.

Since taking over, Westinghouse Electronics LLC has made significant improvements in quality, with its television sets, in particular, praised for their energy efficiency.

Additionally, Westinghouse TVs come with many of the smart TV features you will find across brands. They also feature picture and sound technologies like 4K UHD, 1080p Full HD, HDR, and Dolby Audio.

Furthermore, Westinghouse has, on occasion, created a buzz in the TV manufacturing industry.

A good example was the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, when the company unveiled one of the earliest commercially available 4K UHD TVs in 50″, 55″, 65″, and 110″ models.

During the show, the company also unveiled a 50-inch TV model that could convert 1080p content to 4K UHD.

All in all, Westinghouse TVs may not be of premium quality, but the brand has made a name for itself for offering affordable smart TVs that have solid value for the price.

Does Toshiba own Westinghouse TVs?

Westinghouse Electronics may own the license to manufacture and sell Westinghouse TVs, but it does not own the Westinghouse TV trademark.

Unfortunately, with the original Westinghouse company undergoing so many changes over the years, confusion has arisen over who owns some of its trademarks. This has led to companies like Toshiba and Viacom being linked to the Westinghouse TV brand.

Toshiba, however, does not own the TV brand. However, the company was once linked to Westinghouse TVs, with Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Toshiba having entered an agreement in 1984 to produce color TV tubes in the USA.

Toshiba led the joint venture until 1994, when both companies closed it and sold it.

So, who owns the Westinghouse TV brand?

Well, the TV brand’s trademarks were owned by the original Westinghouse Electric Corporation. They have changed hands a few times over the years, as the original company underwent various transformations.

In 1995, the company acquired CBS, with the new company changing its name to CBS Corporation in 1997.

Then, in 1998, CBS Corporation launched the Westinghouse Licensing Corporation, a subsidiary company tasked with managing the Westinghouse brand and trademarks, including its TV brand.

In 1999, CBS Corporation sold its nuclear energy business to BNFL, with the (sold-off) company renaming itself Westinghouse Electric Company, LLC.

CBS, which later merged with Viacom to become ViacomCBS (now Paramount Global), retained ownership of the Westinghouse brand and trademarks.

The Westinghouse Electric Company, LLC, meanwhile, continued to operate until 2017, when it filed for bankruptcy.

Brookfield Business Partners, a Canadian private equity fund, purchased its assets. It then sold them to Brookfield Renewable Partners and Cameco in 2023, which subsequently formed Westinghouse Electric Company, LLC.

In 2021, the Westinghouse brand and trademarks were purchased by a new company, The Westinghouse Electric Corporation, which reportedly operates as part of the original nuclear energy business.

Therefore, the Westinghouse TV brand is owned by Westinghouse Electric Company, LLC, and, in effect, by Brookfield Renewable Partners and Cameco.
